Course Structure
The participants on these courses should be adept at climbing indoors and some may have climbed outside a little. The objective is to give everyone a taster of outdoor climbing and impart key safety skills (including being able to build good belays) in the same session, no matter their previous experience. The following will constitute the basis for the day’s course syllabus:
- Correct fitting and use of equipment including harnesses, tying in and belaying.
- Discuss guidebooks, crag and route selection.
- Demonstrating, in a safe environment, anchor building, tying in and trad equipment usage.
- Continue with the coaching of climbing movement, gear removal and racking
- Discuss bottom rope systems and anchor selection.
- Review the day with “what next” advice.
The day begins at 9 a.m. and finishes at 5pm. We meet at Symonds Yat Rock Car Park GL16 7NZ.
You will need change for the car park per day – £7. If you wish to pay on your mobile phone you will need to arrive earlier as the signal is poor and you have to register before you can pay, or you can book and pay for parking in advance. Bring lots to eat and drink and a good sized rucksack to help carry the gear. If you need to borrow a large rucksack just ask. Please let me know in advance if you need to borrow sit harness, helmet, belay device or climbing shoes. We tend to stay at the crag once we’re down there but you can always return to the loos and cafe if necessary.
Minimum numbers, price and cancellations of courses
The BMC will advertise and promote the courses, which will run with a minimum of 3 students and a maximum of 8 with participants being charged £60 each. Cancellations can be made by the following procedure:
By Participant. If cancellations are received up to eight weeks before the course attendees will get a full refund; less than eight weeks, but more than four weeks before the course: 50% refund; less than four weeks before the course date: no refund unless a reserve is able to fill the slot. Late non-attendance due to unforeseen circumstances needs to be reported ASAP direct to the course instructor, so that arrangements can be made to allow reserves to attend.
By BMC. The BMC will cancel workshops which do not meet the minimum attendance criteria four weeks of the course date, aiming to offer the participants an acceptable alternative if possible. The Instructor will give a full refund. Every effort is made to deliver all of the advertised courses, however as these are non profit-making, the BMC reserve the right to cancel a course should there be insufficient attendees to cover the costs.
By Instructor. If the Instructor cannot run the course at the last minute due to injury or illness, and cannot find an alternative provider, it is their responsibility to notify candidates of the last-minute cancellation. The instructor will refund the candidate in full.
