I had the absolute fortune to run the most amazing Climbing Wall Award I have ever done, and I’ve led a few. The group – Tom, Lisa, Charlotte, Illya and James were an intersting group with a variety of experience, mostly in their early 30’s and there was knowledge and experience to share. It was an interesting mix and we all learnt from the sharing including me.
The fact that they had different experiences threw lots of questions and ideas into the mix and we experimented a few times to see what would happen. It was great fun too and was refreshing as an Instructor to be made to think outside the box and analyse and look for the possibilities in the suggestions.
Some candidates were more experienced than others, but such was the rich mix and security of the group that no-one was made to feel their lack of experience was a negative thing. From group management to problem solving, from personal climbing to risk assesment the group kept me on my toes and made me more excited than I’ve ever been on a course by their enthusiasm, motivation and potential. It was wonderfully invigorating.
