Glen has definitely got the bug since their first meeting a month ago. He’s been on line and bought lots of shiny new nuts, cams, slings and karabiners which obviously needed wearing in. This time the whole family came along: Krista his wife and Louise and Clare -their 2 girls.
Glen and Krista’s plan is for them both to be competent lead climbers – sport and trad and be able to encourage the children to climb in a safe environment. Ali put a route up for Krista and the girls to top rope and immediately put Glen on the sharp end, to lead a route, create a safe belay and return to the ground, which he did with confidence and efficiency.
Everyone got the opportunity to climb, Krista learned how to take gear out and place it safely on her harness, as well as how to make use of her sticky climbing shoes. She has a fluid climbing style and it won’t be long before she’s leading too – she certainly has the potential.
Clare and Louise did amazingly well, both determined young climbers who with lots of encouragement and support made incredible progress up both routes.
Glen then led a slightly harder route, with Ali belaying, built a belay at the top and made himself safe, ab’d down, stripped the route and recovered the rope – all with very little prompting.
They are a very switched on family and have great love for the outdoors and keeping fit, they encourage their children to join in but it’s not compulsory and it was great to watch both girls happily reading and trying to work out a Rubik’s cube.
Hopefully it won’t be too long before they meet up again and Krista starts to lead. .They are a lovely close family and a pleasure to teach
